If you’re looking to learn how to sell art online for free, then you are going to need 4 key things.
A product, a website, a social platform, and a lot of patience and dedication. It won’t be easy, but if you stick with it you’ll find that you can learn how to sell art online for free (literally) while you sleep.
Let’s dive right into it.
Number 4: A Product
I’m hoping that you already either have artwork to sell, or have a clear idea of artwork that you are going to create in the near future. We can’t hope to make much money selling art if we don’t have any art to sell.
The most popular art that people look to buy online tend to be very similar. Dogs are a huge seller, as are cats to a lesser extent. People love animals in general, but those two especially seem to do well within online art.
Disney is always a safe bet; there’ll never be a time when kids won’t won’t Disney artwork of the latest phenomenons. Likewise, Marvel and DC provide a huge amount of characters to create artwork of, and superheroes have never been so popular!
Of course, it’s worth considering what time of year you are going to be selling art. Last year I worked on a penguin cartoon just before Christmas, but only managed to get it on the market as Christmas was finishing.
I didn’t do so well.
Ideally, you want artwork to be available way in advance of events like Halloween, Easter or Christmas.
Okay, so hopefully you have a good idea of your product. Now, we need to know how to take this product as sell it online.
Number 3: A Website
The best way to learn how to sell your art online for free is undoubtedly with your own website. You have full control over what gets posted, the layout and the aesthetics. There are a lot of online services claiming to be the best website builder online, but I would personally recommend Wealthy Affiliate.
You can build two websites and keep them as long as you want for completely free. You also get free training on how to market your content and gain the highest amount of traffic.
On top of this, you gain the support of a community of internet marketers, all happy to help you with any questions or concerns you might have.
One possible alternative to using a website hosting platform like Wealthy Affiliate could be using an artwork specific site like Redbubble. Redbubble is a site dedicated to helping artists get their work out there; and it is actually a genius system.
All it takes is for you to take a good quality picture of your work, and upload it to the site – that’s basically your job done. From there, Redbubble takes your artwork and applies it to all kinds of products (cushions, mugs, keychains, you name it!), meaning people can buy items with your artwork on it.
Redbubble provides all the materials and covers shipping and all the legal stuff, which is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. You get a generous cut of the final profit too.
The great thing about both creating your own website and using one like Redbubble is that once you upload your art, you can generate a completely passive income. People will be buying your products while you are at school, work, or even on holiday.
But to make this happen, you need people to be visiting your site, which is where my next point begins.
Number 2: Social Platform(s)
There’s no use having an awesome site full of great artwork if no one is going to be paying your site a visit. In order to increase relevant traffic to your site, you will most likely need to create an Instagram or Facebook page advertising your work.
I would personally advise you to go with Instagram, as it is a very visual social network and helps you showcase your art in a more appealing way.
Another great way to drive traffic to your site would be through Pinterest. You could upload images of your artwork and link them to your site, so that whenever anyone comes across your art on Pinterest they may well click through to your site and buy a product with the same artwork on!
You have to be careful with this though, as people may copy and paste your artwork for their own uses. Just be aware, once an image is ‘out there’, your control over it is limited.
Facebook is good if you already have friends who you know will be interested in your art. You can set up a page easily, and then invite as many people as you want to like it.
If you already have a huge friends list then chances are you will be seeing a lot of visitors come to your site.
Lastly, it’s important to mention that word-of-mouth advertising can work well too. Let people know that you are selling some cool artwork you think they might be interested in, and ask them to tell other people if they enjoy your site!
Number 1: Patience and Dedication
This is the most vital part of setting up your online shop.
As long as you work hard, results might not come immediately, but they will come.
It can be hard to keep going, especially when you’re not seeing any success, but at least you know that the only way is up.
Once you have struggled with start up issues getting ranked in Google and getting products noticed, sorting out shipping to clients or responding to email queries later on will seem like a breeze.
